rsz_easter_basketEaster is just around the corner so that means the Easter Bunny will be stopping by your house and leaving Easter baskets filled with fun goodies for kids and parents alike. As you’ve walked through the halls of your local drug and grocery stores I’m sure you have seen the shelves lined with peeps, chocolate bunnies, and jelly beans.
This year, when stocking your Easter baskets with treats, keep in mind that sugar is the leading cause of tooth decay in children and adults. Too much sugar over an extended time can lead to cavities, tooth decay and even gum disease.
Now any Easter basket without sweets would be a bit disappointing for the little ones in your family. But here are some tips for creating a tooth friendly Easter basket.

  • Avoid hard candies and lollipops that stay in the mouth for an extended period of time because they constantly expose the teeth to sugar.
  • Jellybeans may be fun but soft, chewy candies can dislodge sealants and fillings which are even harder to remove on the back teeth.
  • Fill you baskets with healthy alternatives like fruit or sugar free candies.
  • Chocolate is your best choice when used in moderation this is because chocolate melts quickly in the mouth, which minimizes the amount of time teeth are exposed to tooth decaying sugar.
  • Substitute candy with games like coloring books or outdoor toys. Additionally, add a tooth brush featuring their favorite cartoon character or superhero

Your family can still enjoy Easter Sunday but consuming sweets in moderation is key.  Check out this Pinterest board for more ideas of how to make Easter super fun!
