Here at Kidtastic we know that it is hard to making brushing fun. We also know that it is tough to educate youngsters about the importance of brushing and avoiding sugary foods like sugar and candy.
Here is an easy dental experiment that you can do at home to show your children how yucky soda can be.
Here’s what you need:

  • 8 Hard Boiled Eggs (2 for safety/snack)
  • Cup of Soda
  • Cup of Milk
  • Cup of Water
  • Cup of Coffee
  • Cup of Iced Tea
  • Cup of Sugary Juice

Once your eggs have cooled off place one in each of the liquid solutions. These are going to need to sit for a while so it might be a good idea to do this before the kids leave of school or before bed time.  After waiting at least 8 hours pull the hard boiled eggs out of their perspective cups.
Here’s what you should be observing at this point in time.
Water: No change
Milk: No change
Coffee: Brown
Iced Tea: Pink
Juice: Purple
Soda: Brown
Next have your children take a toothbrush to try and brush off the brown color. This is great because it helps to promote proper brushing technique and they can also see the change in color. Additionally, the egg won’t return to its original white color which tells your children that soda can be harmful even if they do brush their teeth!

Bonus Experiment

apple rotten
Here is a fun experiment that anyone can do to explain the problems that cavities can cause within the mouth.
All you need is an apple. Cut a small hole in the top of the apple and leave it out overnight. The hole that was cut out will begin to rot and turn brown.
Explain to your children that a cavity is just a hole in the tooth and it will rot your mouth just like the apple.
