Sedation for Kids

Sedation Dentistry for Kids in Mesa, AZ

Children and adults alike can experience anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist. But anxiety doesn’t have to keep your little one from receiving important care. Dentists like the pediatric dentists at Kidtastic in Mesa offer special sedation options for our young patients from all surrounding areas. With these effective and proven sedation options, our pediatric dentists can help your child overcome anxiety and fear to receive the important care needed to improve oral health and overall well-being. Sedation can also help us complete more care in fewer visits, reducing how long it takes to provide care.

There are three commonly offered sedation options that doctors can use to help patients. The options include nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. Each option can help patients with different levels of anxiety.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, which is also known as laughing gas, is one of the most popular sedation options that dentists offer. Young patients with mild to moderate anxiety, or who only need a routine procedure, are the ones who are most likely to benefit from nitrous oxide. During a procedure, the gas is administered through a special mask worn over the nose. It goes to work fast, within a matter of minutes, to provide effective relief from anxiety. As an added benefit, the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly. Within a matter of minutes after removing the mask, your child will begin feeling like him or herself again.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Like nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation is well suited for young patients who have mild to moderate anxiety. What’s different is that oral conscious sedation involves taking an oral prescription instead of inhaling a gas. The oral prescription your child will take is safe, commonly prescribed, and will put him or her in a relaxed state where they can still respond to questions but won’t feel anxious. With a service like oral conscious sedation, it’s possible to complete more work in a single appointment, thus reducing the number of visits required to complete your little one’s care. Oral conscious sedation doesn’t wear off as quickly as nitrous oxide, though. Your child will be ready to go back to his or her normal schedule by the following day.

IV Sedation

Young patients who struggle with moderate to severe anxiety, or who will be coming in for a more complex procedure, may benefit the most from IV sedation. With your child safely under our care, your little one won’t recognize pain, plus, his or her appointment will seem to have taken only a few minutes when it may have taken much longer. As with oral conscious sedation, IV sedation lets our Mesa pediatric dentists complete more work in fewer visit.
