Custom Athletic Mouthguards for Kids in Mesa, AZ
If your child plays sports, there are certain pieces of equipment you know he or she absolutely needs, like a helmet, knee pads, or shin guards. But what about an athletic mouthguard?
For some sports, like football or wrestling, a mouthguard is an obvious piece of equipment. With a mouthguard, young athletes can enjoy special protection for their teeth, lips, tongue, face, and jaw. Your child doesn’t have to play a rough contact sport to benefit from wearing an athletic mouthguard, though. The ADA has rules that other kinds of athletes—like bicyclists, weightlifters, and gymnasts, among others—can benefit as well. After all, any athlete can take a spill, even one that never comes into contact with another player.
It’s been estimated that anywhere between 13-39% of all dental injuries are related to sports. On top of that, 40% of sports injuries involve the face. All of which means, providing your active son or daughter with protection for their smiles shouldn’t be an afterthought; it should be at the forefront of your mind.
What Is an Athletic Mouthguard?
An athletic mouthguard protects teeth by fitting over them, physically shielding them form harm. But mouthguards aren’t just about protecting teeth. Research has also shown that mouthguards can reduce the severity of concussions. Not all mouthguards are made the same, though. As you’ll see in a moment, some athletic mouthguards fit better than others, making the experience of wearing each one very different.
Types of Mouthguards
In all, there are three different kinds of athletic mouthguards: ready-made, mouth-formed, and custom.
Mouth-formed athletic mouthguards are more effective than store bought versions because they can provide a more personalized fit. Many mouth-formed mouthguards are made from acrylic and can be softened in boiling water so that they conform to the patient’s bite. Mouth-formed mouthguards can be still bulky, though, and can lose their flexibility with time, making them uncomfortable or difficult to deal with.
Finally, there’s the third option—a custom-made mouthguard. At Kidtastic in Mesa, our pediatric dentists are using custom-made athletic mouthguards to give children an athletic piece that fits comfortably, allows for easy speaking and breathing, and provides great protection.
Setting your child up with a custom-made mouthguard starts with us taking an impression of his or her teeth. Then, our lab will use those molds to make a completely personalized athletic piece. With it, your child can get back on the field, the court, or the ice with comfortable, effective protection for his or her smile.
