Hooray! Whether it’s the first time or the fourth–you are pregnant! The doctor has probably given you a long list of things to do and avoid, until your baby is born; from food to medications to exercise—reading the fine print has never been more important. So what about your oral health?  dental care while pregnant
As you already know, a pregnancy puts your body into a more vulnerable state, so its defenses may be a bit weakened for the time being. You may be more susceptible to tooth decay because the acids from vomit can have a devastating effect on your teeth.  If you have morning sickness, try rinsing your mouth with baking soda and water, then brushing your teeth to minimize damage.
The hormone changes and build up of plaque may also result in gingivitis, and could be made much worse if not treated quickly and properly. Make sure to prevent this problem by being extra diligent about brushing and flossing. When you visit the dentist be sure to let them know you are pregnant so they may treat you with special care. Be sure to list all the medications, supplements, and vitamins you are on during your visit as well.
Teeth may also be susceptible to loosening because of the increase in progesterone and estrogen in the body. Make sure to pay attention to your gums: if they feel tender or swollen, talk to your dentist, as this could be a sign of pregnancy gingivitis.
Keep in mind that your oral health will affect the health of you and your baby. So make sure to brush often, watch the sweets, and don’t skip your dentist appointments! After your baby is born, you will be able to get any elective dental procedures, which may have been put off during the pregnancy.  Once your baby is around age one,  it will likely be time for their own pediatric appointment! Congratulations!
