kids mouthwashNow that your child has finally grasped the importance of brushing and flossing on a daily basis, it may be time to take things to the next level of oral care.
When should my child start using mouthwash?
Rinsing with mouthwash after brushing is an important step to begin introducing around the age of 7. The most important thing to teach your child about mouthwash is that it is meant as a rinse, not as a drink! It’s imperative to talk this over with your child, and walk them through the process of rinsing and spitting.
It might be a good idea to first start with a small glass of water. Have your child rinse and spit out the water after they brush your teeth, just as you would with mouthwash. Once they’ve accomplished this small task, they should be ready for mouthwash!
What kind of mouthwash is safe for kids?
There are many different types of kid-friendly mouthwashes available on the market from most of the name brand oral care providers.
Companies like Crest, Listerine, and Firefly all provide consumers with fun and safe mouthwash that will make you and your kids happy!
What happens if my child swallows mouthwash?
If your child is using kid-safe mouthwash, this should not be a problem. If, however, your child somehow manages to get into your mouthwash and end up swallowing some, be sure to call poison control and your family doctor right away. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water immediately after swallowing any mouthwash.
It is extremely important to make sure your child understands that he or she should only be using their own mouthwash!
