1. Forcing yourself to smile can make physiological changes:

  • Psychologists have discovered that if you are in a bad mood, you can raise your spirits by forcing yourself to smile.
  • Smiling can also boost your immune system. Your body is more relaxed when you smile, which builds good health and a strong immune system.
  • When you smile your body releases endorphins which can be a great stress reliever.

2. Smiling is Contagious:

A study conducted in Sweden found that people have difficulty being a sour puss when they looked at other subjects who were smiling without smiling themselves.

3. Women Smile more than Men:

Women tend to smile more than men, but when participating in similar work or social roles, they smile the same amount. These findings informed researchers that gender roles are flexible.

4. Babies are Born with the Ability to Smile:

For the most part, children learn their behavior from parents and their environment.  Scientist believe all babies are born with the ability to smile. It’s instinct!

5. There are 19 Different Types of Smiles:

Researchers from UC-San Francisco identified 19 different types of smile. The smiles are divided into two different categories: polite social smiles which use fewer muscles and genuine smiles which use more muscles on both sides of the face.
