Whenever an infant is teething it can be painful for both the child and parents alike! Fortunately, there are a couple things you can do to ease the pain of a teething child.
However, before we start with the advice we would be remiss if we didn’t dispel a rumor about teething. This should probably go without saying but adults should absolutely NEVER dip their finger in a bottle of whiskey and apply the alcohol to a teething child’s gums.
We are not sure where this old wives tale came from but it’s simply an urban myth!
A baby’s first tooth means that it is time to schedule their first dental visit. There are several options for this including visiting our office or heading to a pediatric clinic. Your dentist will then give an initial exam and make sure there is no infection or excessive bleeding.
Tender gums during teething can interrupt sleep, cause irritability, and chewing. Your child may also develop cold-like symptoms.
As for the pain of teething, be sure to have a supply of clean cold child teething rings and washcloths. Lightly massage your baby’s gums with a clean finger to relieve some of the pressure from the emerging tooth. Consult with your primary pediatrician before using any over-the-counter pain medication.
Prepare yourself for the teething! Teeth generally start to emerge between the ages of six months and three years. Typically, the two bottom-front teeth will by the first to rise through the gum line. Even before teeth emerge, it is advised that parents wipe their children’s gums after feeding so they get used to sensation of cleaning.
