When you think of junk foods that cause cavities, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? You probably guessed candy, because of that sticky, sugary feeling you get in your mouth after a lollipop or chewy kind. While mom or dad probably told you to lay off the candy, it’s harder to kick the habit than you think! So, scientists realized that sweets aren’t going anywhere and instead created a sugar-free bacteria eating super candy!

The researchers in Berlin have claimed to lower the amount of bad bacteria in the mouth using a sugar-free candy containing Lactobacillus paracasei. Also referred to as, L. paracasei, a commonly known probiotic, which is acid and bile resistant. This good bacteria is great for the gastrointestinal tract and he intestines, it has also been believed to help reduce the risk of some cancers!

So Wait, There’s Such a Thing as Good Bacteria?

Definitely! The mouth is full of different types of bacteria, but don’t be grossed out; it’s normal and necessary to have the good kind. The bad bacteria, however, can appear by eating foods like sugar, white flour, and other junk. So keeping your diet rich in fruits and veggies while making sure you take care of your pearly whites can ensure less icky bacteria will be hanging around in your mouth.
After we eat certain things, the bad bacteria in the mouth releases acid, which can start to dissolve the tooth enamel. The candy containing L. paracasei helped prevent Mutans streptococci, the most common type of bad bacteria in the mouth. In the  study of 60 people, 75% of the participants who are the candy showed significantly lower amounts of Mutans streptococci.
The candy-eaters also had to withhold from any sort of brushing or dental hygiene (yuck!) for one and a half days, as well as omit coffee, tea, or any probiotic foods like yogurt to ensure this candy was the real deal.
So when can we expect to see these on the shelves? That’s still a mystery, but we’re hoping sooner rather than later!
