Dental anxiety can prove debilitating to your children, but it’s not uncommon. Many people experience anxiousness in some form or another just before visiting the dentist. To what can we attribute this universal anxiety?

Some of us can’t help but anticipate a painful experience at the dentist’s office. Anxiety can rear its ugly head whether as a result of past experience or imagination run wild – even the familiar smell of a sterile environment is enough to trigger a child’s fear.
We’ve found the best way to resolve dental anxiety is to openly communicate with your children. The topic of conversation shouldn’t focus too much on the importance of good oral health – often times this angle is difficult to resonate with young children. Instead focus on what makes your child feel anxious – ask questions and approach their fears head on.
Sometimes including the dentist in those conversations can better alleviate anxiety and help answer procedure-specific questions. Building a relationship with your dentist based on trust is essential to providing your children with quality oral healthcare.
While addressing fears beforehand is critical, addressing them over the course of treatment is equally important. Work out a ‘code’ with your dentist – your child can raise a hand or tap if they’re experiencing any discomfort throughout their procedure.
Remind your child to focus on their breathing during their appointment. Concentrate on breathing regularly and with control. Anxiety has a tendency to cause us to hold our breath, decreasing oxygen flow to the brain. A lack of oxygen can increase feelings of panic.
Our friendly team will help ease your child’s fears prior and during their appointment. Contact us today and pave the way to better oral health for your children.
