Before Arizona was even awarded statehood, the railroad system played an integral role in bringing people and industry to and across Arizona. The first train made its way to the area in 1877, bringing industry and tourism to the growing communities. While trains are not as heavily used as it once was, you can still catch a piece of this history by checking out the Arizona Centennial Steam Locomotive Tour.
Train no. 844 as part of the AZ Centennial Locomotive TourThe Arizona Centennial Steam Locomotive Tour is a tour of the Union Pacific’s famous Steam Locomotive No. 844. This colossal steam engine weighs in at 454 tons and was the last steam locomotive built for the Union Pacific Railroad. It was used for high-speed passenger travel starting in 1944, pulling trains such as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger. It’s top speed was 120 miles and hour and it was capable of pulling 26 passenger cars at 100 miles per hour.
In 1960, after more efficient diesel engines replaced steam engines, No. 844 was retired to special service as Union Pacific’s railroad ambassador. It has since toured the country, appearing at the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans and the 50th anniversary of the Los Angeles Union Station.
Catching No. 844 in person is an exciting activity for children, who are able to get an eye-level view inside the cab of the locomotive. A Union Pacific engineer is also on hand to answer questions and give an explanation of the engine’s features.
