The Thanksgiving holiday has been an annual tradition in American since 1863. First officially recognized by Abraham Lincoln in the midst of the Civil War, the tradition originated from a gathering of Pilgrims and Native Americans in the early settlement of America. Plenty of things have changed since the first Thanksgiving, especially the way we take care of our teeth.
It’s not uncommon to find a plethora of sugary desserts lining the dinner table around the holidays, desserts that quickly encourage cavities and decay. Keep the toothbrush on standby this holiday season, your mouth will thank you for it later!
Recent studies have shown that frequent exposure to sugar can promote cavities much faster. Dentists advise those celebrating the holiday to have designated periods when they’re allowed to eat their favorite sweets. Eating sugary snacks and desserts throughout the day is bound to spur the development of decay.
Keeping a toothbrush on hand can be pretty difficult depending on your travel plans. Okay, it’s not entirely convenient to stash a toothbrush in your pocket before you make the trip to the in-law’s house. Fortunately, there are plenty of other alternative methods to keep your teeth clean when there’s no brush on hand.
If you can’t find yourself a toothbrush try snacking on apples, raw carrots and celery. These foods can help remove debris that later form into damaging plaque. Another alternative is to chew a sugar free stick of gum following your meal. Lastly, try dabbing a spot of toothpaste on a paper towel and carefully use it to brush your teeth.
A little bit of prevention goes a long way! Make sure you stop into our offices soon for a cleaning and get your smile ready for the holiday season.
