We all know that too much sugar can wreak havoc on our teeth and on our bodies, but especially as the weather gets warmer, we’re tempted to reach for a cold, refreshing soda in the fridge. Next time you’re thirsty, look into these options to keep your teeth safe.
Fruit-filled Water
Flavored waters are more popular than ever these days, but a lot of them still contain sugar or artificial sweeteners. Why not flavor your own water? Just add slices of fruits or veggies to a pitcher of ice water, or put the chopped-up fruit in an ice cube tray and make fruit cubes to add to your tall glass of water.
Go Green!
Studies have shown that green tea may help reduce the risk of several types of cancer, heart disease, hypertension, kidney stones, and possibly even cavities. In addition to this, green tea is calorie-free (if you don’t add sugar) and high in antioxidants. There are several varieties of green tea available and you can drink it hot or iced.
Homemade Lemon-lime Soda
Having trouble relinquishing your favorite citrus soda? Give yourself the occasional treat with Fresh lemons and limes added to sparkling water. You can add a dash of stevia-based sweetener, but use it sparingly. Just a little bit will sweeten up your drink.
Sparkling Fruit Juice
Mixing 100 percent juice with sparkling water gives you a tasty beverage that’s both healthier and less expensive than the sodas in the grocery store. Go for a thick juice, like cranberry, pomegranate or grape. All of these are full of nutrients and antioxidants. For best results, mix one part juice with three parts sparkling water.
With so many options available, it’s easy to get your sweet fix while still protecting your teeth and your body. Try these or come up with some of your own delicious drinks to help you stay cool this summer!
