We all know that we are supposed to avoid plaque when dealing with our oral health, but do you know what plaque is?
Plaque is a sticky bacterial film that collects on teeth and can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease and a host of other health issues. The sticky plaque is a biofilm or thin grouping of bacteria which lives on gums, teeth, and crowns. It forms on teeth as a result of sugary foods, drinks and starches, which you likely encounter on a day-to-day basis. This bacteria releases acids which attack the enamel of your teeth.
Scientists along with the ADA have found some correlative evidence which links between poor oral health and several other issues including heart disease, dementia and diabetes. Experts say that inflammation of the gums can lead to inflammation throughout the entire body. Inflammation, in turn, is an underlying problem in diseases including heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
However, some say that there is no link between heart disease and periodontal disease. It is simply coincidental. Individuals who eat sugary foods, heavy starches and enjoy soft drinks are already at a higher risk for both heart disease and periodontal disease; that if there is a link between the two it is relatively minor.
Regardless of the severity, plaque build-up, if left untreated, can definitely lead to gum disease which begins with gingivitis, then turns to soft pink swollen gums which can cause gums to bleed. Serious periodontal disease may result from a lack of home care treating plaque. This means brushing your teeth twice a day and keeping up with your flossing routine!
