The Effect of Sugar on Teeth

By - Kidtastic Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics

We all know that sugary soda and candies are no good for your teeth, but do you know why? All sugars that can be ingested have a major impact on your overall oral health, but there is a difference between eating your sugar and drinking your sugar.
Sugars that come in liquid forms such as sodas or juices wash over the entirety of your mouth and reach into every small crevice within your teeth. Liquids can be harmful because even with regular brushing sugars can sit in hard to reach places and allow bacteria to propagate. The residue does not wash away with saliva.kidtastic superkids
However, you can easily prevent erosion and tooth decay by keeping up with your homecare. You can do this by brushing your teeth twice a day, regularly flossing, and visiting your dentist twice a year. Here are some other simple steps you can take to avoid tooth decay.
Eat a Wide Variety of Foods
To improve your oral health, be sure to eat food from each of the major food groups. Be sure to eat lean sources of protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.
Drink a Lot of Water!
You should drink about half your weight in ounces of water daily. If you weigh 200lbs aim for 100 ounces of water a day. Water is crucial not only for your oral health but also your body in general.
Avoid soft drinks
Replace soda and sugary juices with water, flavored water or green tea.
Avoid candy, cookies and pastry
We know it can be tough, but try limiting yourself to only small amounts of sweets once or twice a week. Baby steps may be needed here for any sweet tooths: start off slowly, skipping dessert after dinner is a good place to begin!
Limit Snacks
Many nutritionists eating five to six small meals per day for optimal energy and health, large meals tend to produce more saliva which helps wash food from your mouth. If you do choose to snack, pick healthy snacks like raw fruit and vegetables to help build saliva and give your body the nutrition it needs.
