What Happens if Your Child Chips Their Tooth?

By - Kidtastic Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics

As much as you  love your little ones, they’re usually the source of your next gray hair. While parents can expect to see some cuts and bruises from time to time, what happens if your child chips their tooth? First off, is it bad? Is your child bleeding profusely or hurt in other areas? If it’s severe, take him or her to the emergency room, especially if they are having a difficult time breathing, perhaps from the tooth potentially falling back into the throat. Try and locate the tooth, to make sure they didn’t swallow it.  If applicable, look for the signs of a concussion: headache, temporary loss of consciousness, confusion, dizziness, nausea, slurred speech, amnesia, and other irregularities. Father Carrying His Crying Child
When a child knocks out a whole tooth: rinse their mouth, if possible, then use a cold compress to apply pressure for about 10-20 minutes to help reduce the swelling. If they are baby teeth, just clean up the area and make an appointment with a pediatric dentist to make sure the accident was not seriously damaging.
When your child loses an adult tooth,  place the tooth in a glass of milk or saline and call an emergency dentist (if after office hours) who might be able to put the tooth back inside.
If your child chips or fractures their teeth, locate the fragments, so that the dentist may be able to re-bond the tooth together. If the fracture is larger than half the tooth and the nerve is exposed, you should get your child to see someone immediately. He or she may know they have a cracked tooth if they bite down and feel no pain, but feel pain when they release the bite.
Make sure to be careful about the temperature of food and drink you give your son or daughter after the accident, since the nerve of the tooth may be exposed.  Your child may need some sort of pain reliever like ibuprofen to help until they see a dentist. Remember exercise caution, and seek medical attention immediately if needed.
