Your baby is growing by leaps and bounds; after one year they’re heavier, smarter, and have the makings of a very unique personality. It might be hard to imagine taking your little one into the dentist so early, but once their first birthday rolls around (or a few months after their first tooth has emerged) it’s time to get those chompers looked at. So what can you expect at your baby’s first dentist appointment? First, make sure that you see a pediatric dentist, since these practitioners have an additional two years of schooling, and can recognize children’s special needs.
Secondly, don’t worry too much about your little one’s comfort level, the appointment will be as quick as possible. Depending on your baby’s comfort level, the doctor may ask that you wait outside so that he or she can develop a relationship with your baby. If your son or daughter isn’t quite there yet, the dentist may ask that you hold him or her during the examination and cleaning, so they feel safe. Again, pediatric dentists and staff are trained to be extra sensitive to a child’s needs and understand that you must treat them with special care.
The dentist will ask if he or she has any medical conditions or what medications they are taking, as a precaution. During the examination, your provider will be looking for signs of tooth decay and gum problems, alongside jaw or bite issues. Make sure to ask the dentist any questions about things like teething, sucking their thumb, or pacifiers while you’re there. Unless there is a developing health problem such as baby bottle tooth decay or cleft lip, your child will not get x-rays taken until they are around 5 or 6 years old.
The dentist will also talk about your baby’s oral health care regimen, or any concerns you may have. You will likely get recommendations, tips, and other important information to take back with you.
