Have you ever wondered why dental sealants are important for your oral health?  The simple truth is sometimes the combination of brushing and flossing isn’t enough. Applying dental sealants is a simple preventative dentistry procedure that can protect teeth from decay, regardless of your age.
Sealants are virtually invisible plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth, most often the premolars and molars. As the sealant quickly bonds to the unique grooves of the teeth, it forms a protective shield that protects it from developing decay.
This preventative sealant is universally beneficial – children, teenagers and adults without existing decay or fillings in their molars make worthy candidates.
In the ideal scenario, younger patients receive dental sealants as soon as their molars develop. Dentists consider years 6 – 14 especially vulnerable to developing cavities and decay. Occasionally infants will receive sealants to ensure the spacing of their adult teeth isn’t compromised by losing baby teeth prematurely.
Applying dental sealants is a quick and easy procedure. Your dentist will first ensure your teeth are thoroughly cleaned so the sealant will properly adhere to the tooth. After being cleaned, your teeth will be dried and an absorbent material is placed around the sealant area.
Your doctor will apply a special acidic solution to the location of the sealant, causing the tooth surface to roughen. After drying, the sealant is painted onto the enamel of the tooth, causing it to bond as it hardens. Typically a curing light is applied to expedite the final step in this process.
Dental sealants can last for a decade when properly cared for. Your doctor will need to check them during checkups for signs of chipping, replacing the sealant whenever necessary.
