What is it that makes us scared of the dentist? Is it the pointy objects? The drill? The big light shining down on you? Or all of the above? Whether there’s been bad experience in the past, or not—being afraid is okay! There are many ways to calm your nerves so you will not be afraid of the dentist:
Take your time! You can go visit the dentist’s office before your appointment to see the facilities, and get a feel for the place. You can also schedule your x-rays and cleanings at separate times so that you don’t get overwhelmed.
If you’d rather just get it over and done with, you can try to entertain yourself while in the chair by bringing a magazine, an iPod, a friend, or even a stress ball that you can squeeze when you feel uncomfortable. Kiddie dentists are specially trained to make children’s visits a breeze!
Many people reward themselves with a treat after they complete their visit, whether it’s a dessert, or a small toy; everyone loves a prize.
If you or your child has a cavity, remember that with today’s technology, there is little to no pain anymore. It might be slightly uncomfortable, especially when receiving the Novocain, but the procedure will fly by with ease.
Still nervous? Try sedation dentistry, this is also great for smaller children who just can’t seem to understand what’s going on and might panic. The dentist will present a few types of sedation and will work with you to decide which is best for you or your child. If the fear is interfering with your life, try talking with a therapist about these fears to help soothe your nerves.
