Sedation Dentistry for Kids
For adults and children alike, seeing a dentist can sometimes cause anxiety. Thankfully, though, anxiety doesn’t have to be a part of your little one’s next visit. Our pediatric dentists at Kidtastic have a range of special sedation options to offer your son or daughter, including:
- Nitrous oxide
- Oral conscious sedation
Using these safe and effective sedation options, our pediatric dentists can help your child move beyond their feelings of anxiety and get the important care they need to enjoy better oral and overall health. Sedation can also help our team get more care done in fewer visits.
There are three forms of sedation dentistry that our doctors can provide to their patients. They include nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. Each option can provide effective relief to patients with different anxiety levels.
Nitrous oxide, one of the most popular forms of sedation, is more commonly known by its other name—laughing gas. It’s a good option for young patients with mild to moderate anxiety, or for patients who are only coming in for routine care. Nitrous oxide is a gas administered through a special mask worn over the nose. It works quickly to provide relief from your child’s anxiety and wears off within minutes of removing the mask. For your child, his or her appointment will feel like it’s only taken a short time from start to finish.
Oral Conscious Sedation
The second option, oral conscious sedation, is also suited for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. The difference is that oral conscious sedation uses an oral prescription instead of a gas that’s administered through a mask. The prescription your child takes will be a commonly prescribed medication that puts him or her in a state of complete relaxation. He or she will still be able to respond to questions but won’t feel anxious anymore. Using this sedation solution, our doctors can complete more work in a single visit, reducing the number of appointments your child will need. It takes time for oral conscious sedation to wear off, though your child will be back able to go back to his or her normal activities the next day.
For young patients who experience severe anxiety or will be coming in for a complex procedure, IV sedation may be the best option. With your child safely under our care, your child will feel more relaxed than he or she ever has been at a dental appointment, and the appointment will seem to fly by when in fact it may take much longer. Like oral conscious sedation, IV sedation lets our dentists finish more work in fewer office visits, and takes time to wear off completely.
Has your child experienced fear or anxiety when it comes to going to the dentist? Our pediatric dentists can help your little one overcome both of these to help her get the important oral care she needs. Call Kidtastic today to reserve an appointment for your child.
