Routine Dental Care for your Baby
Just like well-child checkups keep your child’s body healthy and strong, routine dental care is essential for your child to maintain a healthy smile and create a lifetime of good oral health habits.
At Kidtastic Pediatric Dental & Orthodontics, our board-certified pediatric dentists provide the best oral health care in a fun, non-frightening environment that puts your child at ease. We make sure even our smallest patients understand each step of the process and learn how to maintain healthy smiles at home!
First Visit to the Dentist
It’s recommended to bring your baby in for their first visit within six months of the eruption of their first tooth, usually around their first birthday. Since decay can affect even the smallest teeth, the earlier your baby visits us, the better the chances of avoiding problems. We’ll check for any early signs of oral health issues and provide guidance on the best way to care for your baby’s teeth. Remember, approaching each dental visit with a positive attitude will help your child feel comfortable with regular checkups.
Setting a Good Example
As part of their natural learning process, little ones are expert mimics, so you can use this to your advantage. Brush and floss daily while your child watches, and they’ll quickly understand the importance of good oral hygiene. Once your child shows interest, offer them their own toothbrush and encourage them to "brush" with you. (Look for toothbrushes with short, chunky handles that are easy for small hands to grip.) Most children won’t have the dexterity to thoroughly clean their own teeth until they’re about six or seven, so you’ll need to handle that part for them. Make brushing fun with flavored toothpaste, character-themed brushes, or even brushing songs. The key is to establish healthy oral habits early, setting your child up for a lifetime of cavity-free smiles!
